The Universe & Its Physics

This blog is a blog by up-and-coming astrophysicist, Kevin P. Kelly. Physicists like Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, Dr. Sean Carroll, and Dr. Brian Greene are his inspirations to achieve a PhD. in physics or astronomy. This blog is deticated to topics in, space and time, relativity, gravity, quantum mechanics, astrophysics, astronomy, stellar evolution, galaxy formation, and the sizes of bodies of mass such as stars, galaxies, galaxy clusters, superclusters, and ultimately, the size of the universe.

M31 The Andromeda Galaxy

M31 The Andromeda Galaxy
Andromeda is an amazingly beautiful galaxy, when viewed upon at the correct wavelengths. One of my favorite cosmic pictures, amongst many. M31 is our closest neighboring galaxy. It is the closest galaxy to our home, The MilkyWay. This 'nearest' galaxy sits 200,000,000 light years away from us. For all the beginners, this means that if you got into a spaceship right now, and embarked on a bold journey for Andromeda, traveling at the speed of light, 186,000 miles per second (you would travel fully around the earth 7 time in one second at this velocity), you would not get there for another 200 million years. Yes... This is the closest galaxy..

The Pillars of Creation

The Pillars of Creation
This is another one of my favorite cosmic images. This nebula is a very small part of a larger nebula, dubbed The Eagle Nebula. These 4.5 light year tall pillars as a matter of fact have ceased to exist long ago. The gas and dust that make them up has been depleted, but beings on planet Earth will still be able to observe them for another 7,000 years! That is how far away they were.

Sunspot AR 1654

Sunspot AR 1654
Our host star, The Sun is over one million times the size of planet Earth; meaning 1,000,000 Earths will comfortably fit inside the volume of The Sun. This picture compares the size of planet Earth to a few choice sunspots in The Sun's plasmatic photosphere. #astonishment?

The Hubble Ultra-Deep Field

The Hubble Ultra-Deep Field
This was the most important picture every taken by humanity. Before this picture was captured by the Hubble Space Telescope, other than by performing specific calculations, it was believed that our MilkyWay galaxy must be all that there was in the universe. It was thought that the galaxy was the universe. When this image was transmitted from Hubble back to planet Earth, it was a big slap in the face to mankind, a culture shock, to say the least. When this spectacular image was looked upon by human beings, there was a sense of inferiority and mediocrity; in a good way, of course. Every speck and practically every pixel in this photograph is a galaxy. The HUDF represents billions of galaxies. Moreover, this is only a fraction of .01% of the sky! This is when humaity learned that there is much to learn about their place in the universe.

The Single Unified Calculation of the Theory of the Universe

The Single Unified Calculation of the Theory of the Universe
Physicists have developed a theory called, 'The Standard Model' that explains what the universe is and what holds it together. It is a simple and comprehensive theory that explains all the hundreds of particles and complex interactions with only: * 6 quarks, * 6 leptons & * Force carrier particles

How You See the World - - How Scientists See the World

How You See the World - - How Scientists See the World
There are some who believe that the universe is simply and fundamentally a mathematical structure. Reality itself is viewed this way because for thousands of years, scientists and mathematicians have painstakingly performed calculations to better describe the world, its physics, and how they work. For example, take into consideration the Newtonian theory of gravity. Newton postulated a theory and a mathematical formula to describe how gravity works. We still use it today. F = G((m1)(m2)/(r^2)) The same concept in which there is a formula for describing how a principle in our reality works is true in countless theories and in countless circumstances throughout history up until present time. It truely seems as if we live in a mathematical world, as everything one can think of can be described and proven through simple calculations. Tell me how you see the world below.

Are the mathematics we use here on planet Earth universal, or relative? Meaning, if we stumbled across an intelligent extraterresterial civilization somewhere down the road, would they have the same understanding of the *fundamental* mathematics we use?

Is Morality a Universal concept, fundamental across the universe and within all hypothetical intelligent civilizations, or is morality relative only to our society and to our time?

Death By Black Hole, Pg. 301

"I suppose I can live with missing decimals, missing floors to tall buildings, and floors that are named instead of numbered. A more serious problem is the limited capacity of the human mind to grasp the relative magnitudes of large numbers. Counting at the rate of one number per second...[t]o count to a trillion takes 32,000 years, which is as much time as has elapsed since people first drew on cave walls."

"People like it when they understand something that they previously thought they couldn't understand. It's a sense of empowerment."
